Paving stands or falls with the base. If that is not prepared properly, the terrace sinks or weeds come through everywhere. I make sure the base is solid and well-draining before the first slab goes down.

Whether it is a new terrace or a driveway that needs redoing: I remove the old paving, get the base in order and lay everything back crisply.
If the rest of the garden needs work as well, I bring it back into shape in the same job: pruning, weeds out and the garden waste taken away.
